Microsoft Dynamics 365 F&O

Transform enterprise operations with Dynamics 365.

Modernise finance, supply chain, manufacturing, and business operations with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations.

Not sure it is the right platform yet?Our D365 F&O advisory answers that question before an implementation is committed to.

The platform

What Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations is for.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations is an enterprise resource planning platform for mid-sized and large organisations. It covers financial management, supply chain, manufacturing, warehouse management, procurement and project accounting in one system.

Its particular strength is multi-entity operation: organisations running several legal entities, currencies, tax regimes and reporting standards, where the requirement is to consolidate reliably without each country running a different system. That is also why it is a large product with strong views on how processes should work.

Microsoft now sells the capability as two products — Dynamics 365 Finance and Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management — though the platform continues to be widely referred to as F&O, and we use that term here for clarity.

The decision that shapes the next five years of cost is where you adopt the standard model and where you extend it. It is made in the first eight weeks.

The business problem

What usually brings an organisation here.

Most D365 F&O conversations start from one of a small number of situations. Each needs a different engagement.

01

An ageing AX estate

AX 2009 or AX 2012 running out of support, heavily customised, with the people who built those customisations long gone.

02

Growth the system cannot absorb

New entities, countries or business lines that the current finance system was never designed to handle.

03

A slow, manual close

Month-end assembled from exports and spreadsheets, with reconciliation consuming days that should not be needed.

04

An implementation that stalled

A programme over time and budget, with scope drifting and confidence in the delivery falling.

05

A live system that underperforms

Live but not delivering what was expected — poor adoption, slow processes, or reporting nobody uses.

06

Upgrade anxiety

Customisations that make every Microsoft service update a risk event rather than a routine one.

Capabilities

Dynamics 365 F&O services we provide.

01

D365 F&O Implementation

Full implementations across finance, supply chain, manufacturing and project accounting — delivered in phases, with each phase producing something the business can use.

02

D365 F&O Customisation

Extensions built through the supported extension model, so Microsoft’s service updates apply without rework. Configuration is exhausted before code is written.

03

Support & Maintenance

Ongoing functional and technical support: issue resolution, integration and batch monitoring, regression testing ahead of updates, and absorbing change as the business changes.

04

D365 F&O Upgrades

Version upgrades with impact assessment, regression testing across customisations and integrations, and a rehearsed rollback plan.

05

AX 2009 → AX 2012 → D365 F&O Migration

Assessment of the existing estate, re-implementation of overlayered customisations as extensions, data migration and reconciliation, and a phased cutover.

06

System Integration

Connecting F&O to warehouse, e-commerce, banking, CRM and reporting systems, with monitoring and replay built in from the start.

07

Business Process Optimisation

Configuring F&O around how the operation actually runs, and redesigning the processes that were carried across unchanged from the previous system.

08

Technical Consulting

Architecture, data model, extension design and performance guidance — including for organisations whose in-house team is doing the build.

AX migration

Moving off AX 2009 or AX 2012.

This is a different kind of project from a fresh implementation, and treating it as an upgrade is the most common way it goes wrong.

The platform architecture changed substantially between AX 2012 and D365 F&O. Customisations written by overlayering Microsoft’s code cannot be carried across — they have to be re-implemented as extensions. Integrations built against the older platform generally need to be rebuilt. And a meaningful proportion of what was customised years ago is now covered by standard functionality, or is no longer used at all.

So the work starts with an honest assessment rather than a migration plan.

  • Customisation inventoryWhat exists, what is actually used, what standard functionality now covers, and what should simply be retired.
  • Extension re-implementationRebuilding what genuinely must be kept, using the supported extension model.
  • Integration rebuildRedesigning interfaces for the current platform, with proper error handling.
  • Data migration and reconciliationIncluding how much history to bring, and proving the balances tie back.
  • Phased cutoverSequenced by entity or business unit where the risk profile justifies it.

Technology ecosystem

What sits around F&O.

An ERP is never the whole estate. These are the components most F&O programmes end up touching.

  • Dynamics 365 Finance
  • Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management
  • Warehouse management
  • Project Operations
  • Dynamics 365 Business Central
  • Dataverse
  • Power BI
  • Power Automate
  • Microsoft Fabric
  • Azure Integration Services
  • Azure DevOps
  • X++ extensions

Business outcomes

What a well-run F&O programme should deliver.

The outcomes we design towards. Results depend on the starting position and the scope agreed, which we assess rather than assume.

01

A faster, calmer close

Consolidation running from one system rather than assembled from exports each month.

02

One operational picture

Finance, supply chain and production working from the same data at the same time.

03

Upgrades that are routine

Extensions built to the supported model, so service updates are tested rather than feared.

04

Capacity for growth

New entities, sites and countries added as configuration rather than as projects.

05

Traceability

Transactions, approvals and changes recorded consistently for audit and for investigation.

06

Lower cost of ownership

Fewer customisations to maintain, fewer manual workarounds, fewer surprises at update time.

Common questions

Dynamics 365 F&O, explained.

What is Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations?

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations is an enterprise resource planning platform for mid-sized and large organisations. It covers financial management, supply chain, manufacturing, warehouse management, procurement and project accounting in a single system.

It is designed for organisations operating multiple legal entities, currencies and reporting standards. Microsoft now sells its capability as two products — Dynamics 365 Finance and Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management — though the platform is still widely referred to as F&O.

What does a D365 F&O implementation involve?

An implementation typically covers analysis of current processes, design of the target process and data model, configuration of the standard product, any extensions required where standard functionality does not meet a genuine requirement, integration with surrounding systems, data migration from the previous system, testing including user acceptance and performance testing, training, and cutover to live operation.

It is normally delivered in phases rather than as a single event — by entity, by module, or by business unit, depending on where the risk sits.

Can you help with AX 2009 or AX 2012 migration?

Yes. Migration from AX 2009 or AX 2012 to D365 F&O is a distinct type of engagement, because the platform architecture changed substantially. Customisations written by overlayering must be re-implemented as extensions, and integrations built for the older platform generally need to be rebuilt.

The work begins with an assessment establishing what carries across, what must be rebuilt, and what should be retired rather than migrated — which is often a significant proportion.

What is D365 F&O customisation?

Customisation is extending D365 F&O with new code where a genuine business requirement is not met by standard functionality or configuration. On F&O this is done through the extension model rather than by modifying Microsoft’s code, which is what allows Microsoft’s regular service updates to be applied without rework.

Sound practice is to exhaust configuration first. Every extension adds testing effort at each subsequent update, and that cost compounds over the life of the system.

What does D365 F&O support include?

Support typically covers resolving issues raised by users, monitoring integrations and batch processing, regression testing ahead of Microsoft’s service updates, applying configuration changes as the business changes, developing small enhancements, and advising on new requirements.

The distinction that matters most in practice is whether support includes only fixing what is broken, or also absorbing ongoing change. We would recommend agreeing that explicitly at the outset.

How long does a D365 F&O implementation take?

It depends on scope — the number of legal entities, which modules are in scope, how much integration and data migration is involved, and how much process redesign is being done alongside. We will give you a specific estimate after scoping rather than a range here that would not mean anything.

What we would say generally: phasing shortens the time to first value considerably, even when it does not shorten the overall programme.
